Q: What are the benefits of introducing return to work interviews? A: If you are going to introduce return-to-work interviews into your business, we recommend that you have a formal structure in place for each interview and ensure that this is followed each and every time every employee returns from a period of sickness absence. The benefits are:
  • Employees have to discuss their absence face-to-face with a Manager which makes it more difficult for them to look someone in the eye if they’ve been swinging the lead;
  • Employees will know that all absence is being closely monitored, followed up and reviewed at senior management level which is another deterrent to prevent them taking fraudulent sick days or taking a day off for a mere cold;
  • If they have genuinely been ill, it provides an opportunity to discuss any support or adjustments that may be needed to help the employee get back to work.
