Q: I want to take on some casual workers leading up to the busy Christmas period. Do I have to pay casual Christmas workers holiday pay? A: All workers are entitled to the statutory minimum of 5.6 weeks’ paid annual holiday which equates to 28 days. You should therefore calculate the holiday entitlement for a casual worker pro rata according to the hours worked. Given the short-term nature of their working with you, it is likely you will not want them to take holiday whilst working for you and so their accrued holiday pay should be paid to them on termination calculated from the day they first start working for you.
