Q: Do we have to provide employees with paid compassionate leave?
A: There’s no legal requirement in the UK for an employer to provide paid time off as compassionate leave. There is legislation allowing employees to take emergency time off for dependants which is unpaid. However, most employers will allow some time off depending on the circumstances. We recommend having a Compassionate Leave Policy which is known to all employees and stipules the amount of time employees can take off in certain circumstances. This ensures consistency for staff and demonstrates an employer providing a genuinely support working environment.
