Parental Leave Changes

Posted on by

To comply with the revised EU Parental Leave Directive, the Government has had to agree to changes to the Parental Leave Regulations. Currently, an employee with a child under the age of 5 years or a disabled child under the age of 18 years, is entitled to take up to 13 weeks’ unpaid parental leave, provided they have at least one year’s continuous service and they are taking the time off to care for the child. The new regulations to be introduced this month have increased the permitted period of parental leave following the birth or adoption of a child from 13 weeks to 18 weeks and the upper age limit for the purpose of parental leave will increase from five years to 18 years for all children from 2015. Employers will still be able to make their own rules for example on how many weeks can be taken each year and how much notice they require to be given.
