Increases to Family Friendly Leave and Sickness Rates

The announcement made last month in relation to increases in national minimum and national living wage rates has been followed by proposed increases to statutory payments.

Qualifying employees are entitled to statutory payments from their employer during periods of sick leave or when taking “family” leave including maternity, paternity, adoption and shared parental leave.

The entitlements for maternity, paternity, adoption and shared parental leave are set to increase on 5th April 2020 from £148.68 to £151.20. The current qualifying criteria will remain.

Statutory sick pay will increase on 6th April 2020 when employees who are absent as a result of illness for four days or more will be entitled to £95.85 per week, increased from £94.25 per week. You only qualify for statutory sick pay is your weekly earnings are equal to or more than the lower earnings limit which current stands at £118 per week. No increased lower earnings limit has yet been announced.

Any employees who are on sick leave or any of the family leave on the date of the change will be entitled to the new rates following the appropriate date.
