Crispin Rhodes Crusaders at Olney 7’s : Match ReportPosted on by Angela Rhodes
Sunny intervals, that was the forecast but we got sunny with torrential rain at times at the Olney 7s Tournament last Saturday. Crispin Rhodes Crusaders looked the part as they started the day with their flag being waived for the first game of the day and in their green crusaders kit. The disappointment of a delay to the first game, as the opposition were stuck in Silverstone traffic, was soon forgotten as Crusaders demonstrated their skills in a win. Only letting their opponents have a consolation try in the last second of the game. The next game was up against the Crusaders nemesis ‘Pod’. They were the team that had knocked Crusaders out of the tournament each year for the last three years and this year drawn in the same pool. A tight game against a good side but Crusaders held their own scoring try for try. With full time approaching the score was one try each but Pod pushed Crusaders back towards their own line. A draw seemed to be the inevitable result but a break for Pod brought them the deciding try and the final whistle was blown. The defeat was a blow but Crusaders picked themselves up to win the next game comfortably against Hollywood 7s. There was time next for the spectators to partake of the generous hospitality of Crispin Rhodes tent where the Pimms washed down the tasty treats on offer. Qualifying for the quarter finals Crispin Rhodes Crusaders showed again how a talented bunch of individuals could pull together as a team. Many of the players had not met before that morning so it was a remarkable feat at they worked so well for each other. Indeed their defence was well organised throughout the day and supporters were treated to a display of skills which despite the wet weather was a delight to see. They showed that form in a very physical quarter final against Hammerheads which saw one of the Crusaders being helped off the pitch (a blow for the next game with one man down). They went on to win by a handsome margin to qualify for the semi final against Clic Sergeant Godfathers. Crusaders by this time as a scratch team not used to the tournament play and one player injured were visibly tired. They lost to an excellent side. Godfathers however went on to win in the final, a consolation that Crusaders were beaten by the best! Another great day despite the weather enjoyed by players and spectators alike, well done Crispin Rhodes Crusaders! See you next year!
