Q: We have a part-time employee who works three days per week. She has now informed us that she is pregnant and will need to take time off for antenatal classes. Can we insist that she attends these classes on the two days of the week that she is not working? A: You can certainly ask her to arrange classes on her non-working days if that is possible but please remember that part-time employees are entitled to paid time off for antenatal care in exactly the same way as full-time employees. In my experience, antenatal classes are usually on set days and times of the week and the individual has very little choice, if any. So, if it is not possible for her to arrange her appointments outside her normal working hours you will have no option but to allow her time off with pay to attend these classes.
