Campaign for Paid Bereavement Leave

There is no statutory requirement to pay an employee who takes time off following a family bereavement. Many employers stipulate a number of days for which they will pay an employee and others exercise discretion depending on the circumstances.

There’s a campaign to urge the Government to give employees the legal right to paid leave. A study of 1,500 individuals carried out by Change Bereavement Leave Campaign found that 70% of UK employees showed they would support the move for a national guaranteed minimum amount of paid leave.

David Cameron has acknowledged this as “an important issue” so let’s watch this space.
